TOP 5 Ways to Celebrate Black History Month in Downtown Los Angeles

February is Black History month and as usual the city is teeming with ways to celebrate and reflect, with many events happening around Downtown Los Angeles.

Celebrate African American art at The Broad and The California African American Museum, join in (or watch) the African Dance Competition, visit the oldest African American Firefighters Museum and, aas always, join the library at one of its many events organized to teach and participate African American culture.




Los Angeles Public Library

The Los Angeles Public Library is hosting exhibits, events and recommending books and podcasts for African American history month.

Storyteller Michael D McCarty uses folktales and personal accounts to inspire audiences.

Events Family Film Screening - The Princess and the Frog

Event: Heritage Month Movie: A Ballerina's Tale

Movie about Misty Copeland, the first African American to become Principal Dancer at the Americal Ballet Theatre.

African American Firefighter Museum

Open House at the only free standing African American Firefighter Museum in the US located in historic Fire Station #30, which was once a segregated firehouse.

The California African American Museum

Visit Los Angeles' excellent museum focused on African American art, history and culture. There are several exhibits and an active program schedule. Current exhibits include LA Blacksmith, and Timothy Washington.

The Broad

Experience art by prominent African American artists in the stunning new Free Art museum Downtown Los Angeles. Works of art on exhibit include those by Jean Michel Basquiat, Kara Walker, John Ahern, Kerry James Marshall, Mark Bradford

African Dance Competition LA 2020
